The Tesla Model 3 has just been shown and for once, it is genuinely a crucial model for the progress of electric vehicles as we see it. After all, the Model 3 is Tesla’s next step towards their “secret master plan” to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. Positioned below the Model S, this new addition will be sold in a number of markets (including India) outside of the US where it’s made.

In many ways, the Model 3 looks like the Model S. The familiar design cues like the large glasshouse, a stubby boot and headlights stretched all the way to the upper bit of the fenders, are all there.

The wheels have been pushed nearer to the corners to bring in more interior room. What adds to the sporty vibe is the fastback-like roofline and big wheels with unique alloy design.

Tesla makes fast electric cars and the Model 3 is no exception. The high power electric motor allows the Model 3 to accelerate from 0-100kmph in less than six seconds which is plenty quick for a small sedan.

Tesla is claiming a driving range of over 200 miles which is around 320 kilometres. Sure, it will run out of juice quicker when driven spiritedly but the range would still be plenty enough for daily driving.

Tesla has made it official that the Model 3 will go into production in late 2017, ramping the brand’s vehicle production to 500,000 vehicles annually. It will be sold alongside the Model S and the Model X. When launched here in India, the Model 3 will take on popular marquees like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and the Mercedes C-Class. The car can now be officially pre-booked for a 1,000 USD.
