To make a career in mathematics after Class XII, you need to pass Plus II with physics, chemistry and mathematics (PCM). To explore the career options after graduation, you must have obtained a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. Similarly, to pursue higher degree or career after post-graduation, you must possess a master’s degree in the same discipline.As far as skill set is concerned, you should have the ability to deploy right mathematical formulae and laws to solve a particular problem besides possessing good communication skills so as to explain the process of problem solving to your peers or generally explaining your work. If you wish to get into Applied Mathematics, then you must possess knowledge of different areas such as finance, geology, computer science, engineering, economics, Industrial management.

If you have mathematics major you may find jobs in any of the following fields: Actuarial scientist: Actuarial science uses mathematics and statistics to assess risk. It applies in finance and insurance fields. The job of an actuary involves analysing data to predict and calculate long-term risks regarding financial decisions and planning. While working as actuarial scientist you will help to choose the investments based on the risk involved in it. i.e investments with more return and less risk. Actuary formulates various insurance policies and calculating the premium to be charged.Statistician: Statisticians apply mathematical principles to the collection, analysis and presentation of numerical data. You will analyse survey results, prepare and present statements of analysis on graphs, scales or other measuring devices. You will forecast future possibilities through this analysis.Operations research analyst: Operations research analysts formulate and apply mathematical modeling methods to develop and interpret information that assists management with policy formulation and other managerial functions. You will help managers to make better decisions and solve problems. If you’re planning to take this profession be sure you have a thorough knowledge of strong quantitative and computer skills: an advanced knowledge in mathematics.Mathematician: A mathematician is a person whose primary area of study or research is mathematics. Mathematicians are concerned with particular problems related to logic, space, transformations, numbers and more general ideas which encompass these concepts. While working as a mathematician you will come up with problems and solutions, etc.Chartered Accountant: With the rapid growth in economy, careers in finance and accounts have gained tremendous popularity and the most esteemed career option in this field is that of chartered accountant. A chartered accountant is somebody who specialises in accounting, auditing and taxation.Software engineer: A highly fulfilling career, software engineers design and develop software. After choosing software engineering as a career option, you will apply the theories and principles of computer science and mathematical analysis to create, test, analyse and evaluate the software applications and systems that make computers work. It is a highly paid job in India as many maths teachers provide coaching or tuition to students. Mathematicians who work in academia usually have a mix of teaching and research responsibilities.Computer systems analysts: Professionals in this field use IT tools to help enterprises of all sizes achieve their goals. Most systems analysts work with specific types of computer systems – for example, business, accounting, and financial systems or scientific and engineering system to prepare cost-benefit and return-on-investment analysis to help management decide whether implementing the proposed technology would be financially feasible.
