While the first-gen Volkswagen Tiguan never made it to the Indian market, the second-gen model (shown late last year) is definitely headed here. Now the Tiguan is special simply because of the fact that its Volkswagen India’s maiden take on the small crossover space. Naturally, VW has high hopes with this second-gen model that uses the brand’s latest design language and the flexible MQB platform.
New from the ground up, the Tiguan is 60mm longer, 30mm wider and sits 33mm lower to the ground compared to the old one. The 2681mm wheelbase, too, is longer by 77mm for better cabin space.
At the front, a pair of rectangular headlights and the simplified grille design highlight the Tiguan’s upright stance. The front bumper and the low-set fog lamps are also rather simple looking.
In profile, the neat character lines and the slightly flared wheel arches help define the no nonsense approach towards the overall design. Do note that the India-spec cars will have smaller alloy wheels.
The rear is the most striking of all thanks to those extensively detailed split taillights. Like the Hyundai Creta, the number plate housing is on the lower half of the tailgate and not on the rear bumper.
Inside, the dashboard is now aligned towards the driver. That said, those familiar with VW cabins would feel at home because of the familiarity of switchgear and the overall layout of materials.
The head-up display is a neat little feature, one that was earlier found only on high-end cars. However, to keep costs low VW India might not include this feature on India-spec cars.
Globally, up to three new petrol engines, with power outputs from 125bhp to 180bhp and four new diesel engines ranging from 115bhp to 240bhp would be on offer.
Gearbox options, meanwhile, will include either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG. A powerful yet efficient diesel engine paired to a DSG would certainly add to this car’s appeal here in India. Having shown it at the 2016 Auto Expo, Volkswagen India has officially announced that they will bring the Tiguan to India during this fiscal year.
