OnePlus 5T Name, 3.5mm Headphone Jack Presence Officially Confirmed

Days after some leaks and rumours, and following some recent hints by its executives, OnePlus is working towards building additional hype for the OnePlus 5T. The Chinese company has used its social media networks to all but confirm the ‘OnePlus 5T’ name and the presence of a 3.5mm audio jack on the upcoming smartphone.

Update 2 November, 6:45pm IST: Since this story was published, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has officially confirmed both the OnePlus 5T name and the presence of the headphone jack in the upcoming smartphone via a forum post detailing the rationale behind the decision.

OnePlus on Wednesday tweeted a teaser image that points to the 3.5mm jack-equipped OnePlus 5T. The image showcases the bottom of all the OnePlus smartphones that have been launched so far, including the original OnePlus One and the latest OnePlus 5, to highlight the audio jack. “What do our phone have in common?” reads the teaser tweet.

The availability of the audio jack would make the OnePlus 5T one of the few flagships that still offer the port, given the the Galaxy S8, iPhone X, and Pixel 2 have all done away with it.

Hours after the first teaser, OnePlus tweeted another image on Wednesday evening to all but confirm the name ‘OnePlus 5T’. The tweet includes an image that shows five cups with tea bags in them — revealing the “T” behind the name of the OnePlus 5 upgrade.

Historically, OnePlus has favoured the alphabet “T” to distinguish the new upgrades to its existing flagships. The Shenzhen-based company last year unveiled the OnePlus 3T as the new version of the OnePlus 3.

If we believe some past rumours, the OnePlus 5T will be the company’s first smartphone to sport a bezel-less display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The thin bezels would shift the capsule-shaped fingerprint scanner to the back of the device. The smartphone is likely to have a portrait mode to capture images with bokeh effect.

Last week, OnePlus co-founders Carl Pei and Pete Lau teased a top-notch camera experience on the OnePlus 5T. The executives posted some camera samples that were supposed to have been captured from the new smartphone.
