BOSSES at The Pokémon Company have unveiled a brand new Pokémon game for your smartphones – Pokémon Quest.

The game was initially only available to download on Nintendo Switch, but it’s now come to iPhone and Android phones too – and it’s free to start.

Pokemon Quest is the next big Pokemon game to hit your mobile phones

Pokémon Quest is a “rambunctious action RPG” with blocky Minecraft-eseque graphics.

The game takes place on a new area called Tumblecube Island, which is occupied by first-gen Pokémon – just like the franchise’s Kanto region.

Players are tasked with adventuring around the island, battling Pokémon as you go.

Since its release on Switch last month, it’s been downloaded over a million times.

What sets this game apart from a standard Pokémon RPG is that all the battles are done in real-time.

Usually, Pokémon battles are turn-based, making for a slow and laborious combat system that relies heavily on tactical thinking.

But in Pokémon Quest, you control your Pokémon’s attacks by tapping the screen of your phone or Switch.

What’s particularly exciting is that Pokémon Quest was developed by Game Freak.

Pokémon aficionados will know that’s the same company behind the core Pokémon game franchise on handheld consoles.

This is Game Freak’s first solo foray into Pokémon on mobile, and could be a sign of bigger things to come.

The game is free itself (including on the eventual iPhone/Android release), but there are microtransactions that could tempt you.

You’ll be able to purchase decorations to customise your in-game Base Camp using real-world money.

But it seems that the in-game purchases will be strictly limited to cosmetic items only – for now, at least.

The Pokémon Company said that the game will be available on Android and iOS in late June, although there’s no firm launch date just yet.

Pokémon Quest was revealed alongside two other major Pokémon announcements.

There’s a new Pokémon Go-style game for the Switch coming in November, which is called Pokémon Let’s Go.

And in 2019, we’ll be getting a brand new entry to the core Pokémon franchise on handheld consoles – but we don’t know its name right now.
