TWITTER is changing your timeline as part of a wave of updates that put news front and centre on the platform.

Soon, you’ll see breaking news and events and personalised stories at the the top of your timeline as a mix of tweets and media (including pics and video) based on the people and brands you follow.Twitter’s new news feature will appear at the top of your timelineGet ready to receive more personalised Twitter notifications on mobile – but at least you can switch them off if you don’t like them

Tapping the new feed will expand it to show you recaps, moments (the curated slideshow of tweets that lives inside a dedicated tab on the service), latest tweets, and videos.

The update will basically save you having to trawl through Twitter to follow the accounts covering a live event, like the World Cup for example.

“With these changes, you should get a personalized notification when the game is on and the game at the top of your timeline,” tweeted Twitter’s Sriram Krishnan.

The timeline tweak is an extension of the “Happening now” feature – a scrolling list of top sports tweets at the top of the timeline – introduced last October.

Twitter says the feature will be available to US users on iOS and Android in the coming months. We’ve reached out to the company to pin down a UK launch date, and will update this article with its response.

But there’s more: the company will soon start pinging users more relevant breaking news notifications based on your interests (like who you follow and what you tweet about).

And if you don’t like the pop-up messages, you’ll be able to turn them off via the settings menu.

Moments is also getting a drastic revamp, including a new, endless, vertical scrolling design – right now you swipe horizontally to view each slideshow – that matches the main Twitter timeline.

That way, you may end up spending more time on the news-oriented feature.

Select Moments will also be split up into multiple timelines, including a recap feed showing tweets you may have missed, another showing the latest tweets, as well as top commentary, and live video when it’s available.

And like Facebook, Google, and Apple before it, Twitter has caught World Cup fever.

The platform is launching a dedicated World Cup page and individual pages for each game. These will be condensed at the top of your timeline, allowing you to tap to open them up to view live scores, tweets, videos, and Moments.

The footy-themed feature lands today on Twitter for iOS and Android, as well as the mobile site, in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, French, Italian, German, Russian, and Arabic.

“We’ve been working to change how you discover all the information around news, events, and stories, and today, we’re sharing a few steps forward. It’ll be easier to find and follow the big events and stories you care about in your timeline, notifications, and Explore,” said Twitter’s Keith Coleman in a blog post.

“We’re keeping you informed about what matters by showing the Tweets, conversations, and perspectives around topics you care about. Our goal is to make following what’s happening as easy as following an account.”
